Project Background

This site began as the final project for an undergraduate art history course at the University of Texas at Austin under Dr. Astrid Runggaldier in the fall semester of 2018. The aim for “Woven Southwest” is to allow the public access to the resources available at UT regarding the collections of donated nineteenth and twentieth-century Navajo, Hopi, Chimayo, and Pueblo textiles. This site intends to be a resource for researchers by providing images taken by the authors of this site, as well as a full catalog of the Southwestern Native American textiles in UT’s Art and Art History Collection (AAHC), which are otherwise only available to view with a UT eid. Although the contents of this site may reveal more about the archival process than the creators of the textiles, the focus of this site is to highlight this “hidden” collection, which has thus far lacked the scrutiny of the public and scholars alike.

  • Photos of textiles were used with the permission of the Art and Art History department and downloaded from the DASe  (Digital Archive Service) in the Art & Art History Visual Resources Collection. Images have also been incorporated from Artstor for purposes of non-commercial educational and scholarly use.

  • Digitized paper records were scanned and downloaded from the Art and Art History Collection. Contact the creators of this website or Dr. Astrid Runggaldier for further information.

  • Images are claimed fair use.
